Week # 2.Hollywood Bowl. Yuting Zhang

The picture is from a performance in Hollywood Bowl, which joins modern dance and symphonic music performances together. The light directs audiences to focus on the dancers rather than the symphony orchestra. Audiences can see the dancers and even their facial expressions very clearly. But the symphony orchestra is in the dark.

The green light on the dancers separates them from the yellowish background, and distorts their figures. The green lights set a mysterious, and kind of unsettling atmosphere. This picture tells me that the lighting of people on stage can change how viewers perceive them.

It makes me understand that the lighting of people or objects really matters. Sometimes I experience this kind of situation. I buy one dress from the store, thinking I like it. But once I wear it on the street where the light source changes from artificial lighting to sunshine, my impression of the dress changes and I may not like it as much.

  1. Really great thought and detail in your commentary! Love the isolation and the focus that the lighting is giving this stage! The orchestra is meant to be heard, not necessarily scene, but the dancers on the other hand, is a very visual art form. Knowing these facts greatly influences how we should light them. The Hollywood Bowl is also such an iconic venue, that huge beautiful curvy backdrop really shows a nice gradient of color and depth... nice job!
